Rockhaq school workshops have landed at Moat Community College in Leicester! Ofsted say it’s a good school with many outstanding features. It’s also the first secondary school in Leicester to run Rockhaq music journalism workshops. Great news!

We have arranged to work on an innovative English literacy pilot project at this secondary school. We’ll work with a group of year 8 students studying English at Moat Community College this April. Our workshops will finish by mid-May.

Moat Community College Workshops

Award-winning journalist and Rockhaq founder Michelle Dhillon will lead four in-depth workshops on How to Write A Great Music Review for Key Stage 3 students. Michelle de-constructs the music review, so students can write ‘in their own voice’. Students are free to write about any music they love. Michelle’s passion for all genres means she can connect with each student’s individual taste.

By the end of the workshops, all pupils will have completed at least one professional music review. They will also be inspired to continue writing music reviews on the Rockhaq community too. The Rockhaq community is a free and safe place for students to share their thoughts and opinions on music with their peers. It has inspired interesting debates on artists like Tyler the Creator by Sam Brookes, Blink 182 and Drake.

“I love the sound of Rockhaq workshops!”

English Literacy Co-Ordinator at Moat Community College Veena Shaunak says: “I love the sound of Rockhaq workshops and am sure our Year 8 English students will find music review writing a great way to develop their language skills, while telling us why they love the music they listen to.”

We wish all Moat Community College pupils the best of luck for their upcoming workshops!
