Michelle Dhillon: Founder & Editor

Hello! I’m an award-winning journalist and ex-PR operating through Howl PR & Digital. I graduated with first-class honours in English Language and Literature from The University of Manchester, an MA in Newspaper Journalism and worked as a journalist and editor for The Manchester Evening News (Guardian Media Group) and Microsoft B2B magazines. I’ve interviewed acts and notable people including the late Sir Terry Pratchett, The Killers, Kasabian, Franz Ferdinand, Beth Ditto and IT managers from The London Stock Exchange, L’Oreal and Dell along the way.

Fact: You often get just 60 minutes or less to send a finished live review into your newspaper editor after a show – so you need to be fast and accurate!

What motivates me: I set up The Rockhaq Community to inspire young people to get involved in music journalism and improve their literacy skills at the same time.

Phil Swift, Photographer & Teacher

Hello! I studied photography at Southampton Solent University and after graduating worked as a style director for two major commercial studios before setting up my own studio and becoming a photo editor for two regional magazines. I won the Levi’s Ones To Watch photographer competition and worked for them for for three years too.

Now I teach photography at West Nottingham College and encourage students to undertake live music photography as part of their education. There’s nothing like covering a live show, it’s a brilliant experience.

All of the live images you can see on Rockhaq (including images of The Ting Tings, Spiritualized, The Hives, Justice, Kasabian), on postcards and on our business cards are my work.

Fact: You get ten minutes to take photos at a live show and sometimes have to work without a flash and all sorts – make the most of every opportunity you get!

My Favourite Live Shows: These have to be Faith No More at Download in 2009 and The Hives at Nottingham Rock City back in 2008.
