Club Rockhaq June 2019

We thought we wouldn’t be able to top the excitement of all our recent BBC coverage – Michelle was interviewed in April and Club Rockhaq was live on air in May – but we did! Firstly, one of our most prolific Community writers Mark Wong led a surprise Club Rockhaq workshop at Leicester Central Library last week. Mark is now teaching English in Vietnam so made a super special flying visit to a selected group of Club Rockhaq writers.

Then a day later we had our usual monthly workshop where we built on the great work that Rob Gee began in May and wrote more new songs. It was yet another action-packed month that resulted in revelations on diverse topics including Donald Trump and the peerless Roger Moore (God rest his soul). I’m still laughing as I write this news – you’re all brilliant 😃🙌

WHAT HAPPENED AT CLUB ROCKHAQ: MONTH FOUR?

Let’s go back to Mark Wong‘s workshop at the Central Library. Mark came up with some great new ways to engage with writing music reviews. We also played some cool games that I’ll run at more workshops. This was all a very different approach and a great way to break down what a review is and what writers might like to think of including in their own work.

One student was inspired to write his very first album review – on Sonic Youth! All students were engaged throughout the 2.5 hour workshop and we got ace feedback afterwards. I’d like to say a very big thanks to Mark for coming to see us and leading this workshop during the short time he’s back in the UK. Thanks to all Central Library staff for giving us the space at short notice too – we really appreciate it.

Back to Club Rockhaq in June. Honestly, you really had to be there to savour the lyrical mayhem that was occurring. Donald Trump’s current UK state visit provided a great source of satire, as did the likelihood of meeting your demise in Oadby Flooring. There was some aggression shown towards Lil’ Wayne, designer label Gucci was subjected to a withering statement and Khia and I were transformed into superheros with telekinetic powers 🤖

Quite frankly, it was one of our best workshops yet, even if we do say so ourselves. We’re very proud of all our Club Rockhaq writers – and we’re looking forward to showcasing this surreal work with a wider audience in the not too distant future.
