BBC Radio Leicester at Club Rockhaq in May

Yes, you read that right! After our interview with the lovely Rupal Rajani on BBC Radio Leicester in April, she sent “roving reporter” Dale Neal to our May Club Rockhaq workshop. This meant our Oadby Library workshop went out live on Rupal’s Saturday morning show. And if that wasn’t enough, we had all-round smashing chap Rob Gee visit to impart his lyrical wisdom upon the two library groups. We’re really not sure how we’re going to top this, going forward. It all made for an action-packed month that resulted in songs on various topics – from the apocalypse to goth unicorns! 🖤🦄

WHAT HAPPENED AT CLUB ROCKHAQ: MONTH THREE?

Let’s move back to Rob Gee. This month kicked off the first of several workshops where Rob will develop Club Rockhaq students lyric writing and poetry skills. He had everyone engaged in playing word games and then moved from this to writing lyrics, with great ease. The songs produced varied wildly – everything was covered from little sisters, school being cancelled, the apocalypse and goth unicorns. There was so much creativity and word play going on that it was hard to keep track of it all.

We also heard some ‘music-related puns’ being shared around the group, mainly in relation to Radiohead, which was another unexpected development. Paranoid Android and OK Computer clearly have a lot of amusement to offer the young generation. To say that Rob’s workshops went down a storm is probably an understatement. One student emphatically declared it was the “best workshop yet!

Thankfully before all the mayhem began, Dale Neal spoke to our Oadby Library group about the work they’d been doing so far at the Club Rockhaq workshops. Two of our youngest Club Rockhaq writers spoke at length about Nirvana and Ava Max – wildly diverse artists I’m sure you’ll agree. Joe, who spoke about Nirvana, also gave the listeners a surprise drum outro at the end of our live broadcast. What a professional!

The full interview is just below for your listening pleasure and we’re sure we’ll have BBC Radio Leicester at Club Rockhaq again as our writers continue to progress. Exciting times!
