Opinion: Moyles’ ‘Morons’ Raise Money
Chris Moyles should be applauded for his charity plea to his listeners. The Yorkshire DJ often comes in for criticism and more recently his listeners have been branded ‘morons’ by the national tabloids, but he and his listeners’ generous side is often overlooked. Regular listeners to the show will already know about Moyles’ charity work over the years. This week he championed his listeners efforts and cajoled them into raising vast amounts of money to support John Bishop in his ‘Week of Hell’ challenge for Sport Relief.
The shows this month have been heavily based around John Bishop’s challenge and giving money to sport relief via text. The totals of money raised by Radio 1 listeners have often jumped by hundreds of thousands of pounds during the show. Considering the text lines for giving money are open 24/7 throughout every Radio 1 show, the fact that The Chris Moyles Show listeners have raised more than half the current £559,000 total is staggering.
This feat was made even more commendable by John Bishop. On the 4th day of his ‘Week of Hell’, he mentioned in one of the phone calls to Radio One that the number of African children potentially saved by the money raised purely by Radio 1 listeners, had reached 100,000. That’s enough to fill Wembley Stadium. Despite this achievement, I doubt it will get the same amount of press coverage that Chris Moyles attracted when he ranted about his wages not so long ago.
