Club Rockhaq Workshops: March 2019
We had an awesome time at our second month of Club Rockhaq workshops in Leicester last weekend. Thank you to all workshop learners and parents for coming along/encouraging your youngsters to attend. It was exciting to see the range of creative music reviews that are being written and it’s brilliant to see how quickly every writer has progressed since month one. We’re also pretty full at both libraries, which is great news 🙂
WHAT HAPPENED AT CLUB ROCKHAQ; MONTH TWO?
In a nutshell, we got everyone started on writing their first reviews. Everyone had completed their homework, so all students came prepared with albums and songs to write about. We kicked off by sharing tips and ideas on writing their opening paragraphs. But the sheer level of progression that Club Rockhaq students showed when writing their reviews was really astonishing. Many students wrote reams of engaging, lively work and were already well ahead of us when we moved onto writing a second paragraph.
Not everyone has the confidence to come along to a creative writing workshop at a young age and some of our younger learners were understandably shy in their first workshops. Khia and I encouraged them to feel more at ease and I have to say I’m blown away by the work they produced, and how determined they were to write it. One young student refused to engage with us but worked diligently to write a whole side of A4 by the time the workshop had finished. And the work was exceptional.
WHAT MUSIC WAS COVERED?
Again our broad age range across both groups means we have an eclectic mix of work being written. We set work for two different writing levels in both groups, which is a tactic that seemed to help all students. There are writers covering acts including Queen, Alter Bridge, Ava Max, BTS and Crush 40 – a Japanese-American rock band who make music for Sega/Sonic the Hedgehog games.
Nathan Brooks is penning new work to mark the upcoming anniversary of The Velvet Underground album released in 1969 and we’re hoping more of our new Club Rockhaq students will join him in building a steady stream of thought-provoking work. Next month’s workshops will see the Club Rockhaq writers finishing their first music reviews, before moving on to lyric writing with Rob Gee in May.
