Club Rockhaq October 2019

Summer is well and truly over – and don’t we know it? But thankfully our Club Rockhaq students are still shining a light on all things to do with music, reviews, lyrics and creative writing. We came back in September and have all worked on reviewing the same song. We’ve never done this before.

This has been going on for the past two workshops and some students have already finished. One student finished his whole review in one workshop. Just goes to show that some learning is happening at Club Rockhaq and we don’t just sit around and talk about (or eat) food 😀😋

WHAT HAPPENED AT CLUB ROCKHAQ: MONTH EIGHT?

So what are we all reviewing? Only the classic precursor to UK Grime, Turn The Page by The Streets. This is the opening track on the era-defining album Original Pirate Material and one that’s often overlooked as it was never released as a single. But what a fantastic track! The lyrics are full of war, death, religion, destruction and a phoenix rising from the flames. A new hope.

Obviously I’m very biased towards this album and one parent agreed that Mike Skinner is/was a modern-day poet. Turn The Page boasts wonderful lyrical flow:

That’s it, turn the page on the day, walk away/
‘Cause there’s sense in what I say/
I’m 45th generation Roman/
But I don’t know ’em…/

Turn the Page: The Streets, Original Pirate Material (2002)

Having said that I’m not sure the majority of the students agreed! One student wished they had never heard the track. Sad times 😢

But looking at Turn The Page has inspired some Club Rockhaq students to write their own tracks. We think that next month’s lyric writing workshop with Rob Gee will see more songs emerging. They may be about Greggs and various shops on the Oadby Parade rather than driving the UK Garage scene forward, though 😂

These workshops on The Streets have been a very interesting experiment so far and we don’t think the results have all been realised yet. Keep watching out for updates on our last two Club Rockhaq workshops of 2019.
