Hardcore punk. When you hear those words, what do you think of? Some may think of tiny venues with insane mosh pits and sweat trickling down the walls. Others may think of hardcore legends such as Black Flag, Bad Brains and Misfits. When I hear these words, after having seen them support Dead Kennedys at the 02 Academy in Oxford, all I can think of is Sick Ones.
After releasing 3 exciting singles, 2 EPs and having opened for Dead Kennedys on 3 UK dates on their 2018 tour with new frontman Ron “Skip” Greer, the British trio have won a lot of attention. They are a D.I.Y. band, directing all of their videos and releasing all their songs themselves, an admirable approach among the punk rock community. That being said, lets move on to the Find Energy EP.
The opening track Ego Death is an insane listen. With an instrumental intro similar to that of the legendary Dead Kennedy’s song California Uber Alles, the group launches into an insane whirlwind of a track with singer Andy repeating the phrase “This is all a performance” over and over again. Whilst not the most popular track to appear on the EP, it is arguably the stand-out track on Find Energy.
Bad Way is a collection of powerful guitar, kick-ass drums and vocals that sound like Satan casually discussing the weather.

The next track is Bad Way. It is the trio’s most popular number by far and it’s obvious why. Proving wrong the stereotypical idea that hardcore punk has no rhythm and no structure, Bad Way is a collection of powerful guitar, kick-ass drums and vocals that sound like Satan casually discussing the weather.
Other highlights on the EP are Moving Forward, which proves that rather than holding them back, their lack of a bass player gives them a unique, raw sound. The Choice, with it’s jolting power chords, is also an incredible tune. All in all, I would recommend Sick Ones to any hardcore fan and I am sure that in ten years time, Find Energy will be a vital part of any punk record collection.

Brilliant review! I’m intrigued by Sick Ones and a big fan of Bad Way but could never get into the rest of the EP. That being said, it serves as an excellent taster and has given them a firm position on my ones to watch list. I’m really hopeful their first full-length will be something special.

Thanks for the support, sorry it took me so long to reply, I’ve been off sick.

I agree, Jonah. Great work! If you feel up to writing a live review of Sick Ones/Dead Kennedys, then Mr Sam Brookes is certainly one of the best to learn from. Check out some of his early work here
