Album Review: Sigur Ros – Takk…

Josh Tolley

Sigur Rós’ stunning fourth album Takk… is such a beautiful treat for anyone’s ears and takes you on a journey from start to finish. Sigur Rós are a post-rock band that hail from the lovely place of Reykjavík in Iceland and they don’t really sound like anything you’ll have heard before. They have their own sound which they create with gorgeous falsetto vocals from lead singer Jon Por “Jonsi” Birgisson, who also plays guitar for the band with a bow and does this in a spectacular way.

Takk… begins with its brilliant self-titled opening track that makes you feel as if you are floating the very first time you listen to it with its eery space-like sound that could help anyone relax and that is exactly what it does. Every track on Takk… has that magical feel to it, that feeling you get when you feel fully relaxed and zoned out, it makes you really appreciate life and how perfect it actually is. After the opening track follow ten more magical gems waiting to be discovered. The last track Heysátan is an emotive track to end the album on with the soothing vocals from Jonsi and the slow mellow melody of the piano.

My favourite track on the album has to be Hoppípolla with its stunning piano and incredible vocals from Jonsi. This is one of those tracks that you can listen to whatever mood you may be in and just sit back, close your eyes and relax. The song is a masterpiece and such an underrated song because more people NEED to know about this fascinating band.

The genre of Takk… is post-rock and features mostly instrumentation with little vocals. Sigur Rós create the most compelling and imaginative sounds I have ever heard from any other band with the lovely out-of-this-world falsetto vocals, great guitar playing and instrumentation from the lead singer Jonsi, strong bass and instrumentation from Georg “Goggi” Holm, brilliant synthesizers and instrumentation from Kjartan “Kjarri” Sveinsson and superb drumming and instrumentation from Orri Pall Dyrason.

I’ll give Takk… 5 stars out of 5 purely because every song on the album is absolutely perfect with no flaws whatsoever. Each song has a different and unique sound to it with the superb instrumentation and vocals from the band. If you are someone who would like to experience life in a whole new way through compelling and imaginative music, then I recommend that you pick this album up as soon as you can because it’ll stick with you forever and you’ll be replaying it more times than you think, I know I have and I don’t regret it ONE bit.
