Rockhaq in Action: Literacy

The beginning:

Simon is a 12 year old secondary school pupil who needs to improve his literacy skills. He has a higher than average attendance record but his reading and writing skills are still poor due to lack of student engagement and his English teacher is worried that he won’t grasp critiquing skills as part of Key Stage 3 learning.

The end:

Simon is awarded a Rockhaq mission to review the new Calvin Harris album.

So what happened in between?

1. Simon signs up to Rockhaq, sets up his blog and adds friends.

2. Simon completes a series of entry level missions in class over a month. He downloads MP3s from our singles vault, listens to them and chooses words to describe the music, improving his ability to use different adjectives to describe the music he enjoys listening to. He watches our video guides to reviewing and listens to teacher input, improving pupil engagement with class learning. He uploads all his work to his blog, developing new IT skills in the process.

3. Simon’s teacher adds her comments on each blog, notes progress and development, allowing for good pupil teacher feedback. She awards badges which help Simon to access more MP3s from the singles vault and improve his motivation. Over the course of six weeks, Simon’s writing skills show a huge improvement and he has grasped the basics of writing a review. Simon’s teacher is now confident that he has the right literacy skills to pass Key Stage 3 learning.

Simon’s improved his literacy and reading and writing skills at school, thanks to Calvin Harris.

Acceptable in the 80s, 90s, noughties and the present day.
