Review: Sonar Festival 2010 - Day One

Writing this in retrospect five days after Sonar festival 2010, it’s hard to believe that I’m still buzzing after this incredible 3 day event in Barcelona. A unique concoction of fabulous weather, a mental crowd of Europeans and an incredible line-up all conspired to make this year’s Sonar a totally awe-inspiring experience. If there’s one thing the Spaniards have got down perfectly, it’s how to party in the sunshine!

Teri Gender Bender are a cross between PJ Harvey and Slipknot. Really.

The standout acts during Thursday had to be the UK’s Professor Green (pictured), Caribou and the weirdly-monikered Teri Gender Bender. The latter are like a cross between PJ Harvey and Slipknot. No, really! This crazy clash of extreme femininity and guys in masks nurtured by the Red Bull Music Academy is definitely something you need to see. Meanwhile over on the main Village stage, supersonic MC Professor Green set the party vibes alight in the hot Spanish sunshine.

With a smattering of in-your-face samples from Beats International’s 90’s hit Dub Be Good To Me and INXS’s classic Need You Tonight on his killer tracks Just Be Good To Green and I Need You Tonight, Professor Green knows full well how to kick it. This is no bedroom pop artist though, he spits out acidic raps like there’s no tomorrow and things go into overdrive when Upper Clapton Dance, with its ultra heavy beats, gets introduced to the Spanish crowd. This guy is surely destined to be a star, no? One thing’s for sure, Virgin Records is onto a surefire winner with this signing.

A pretty damn sophisticated outing from Caribou

Caribou heat things up again with their appearance back in the jam-packed Red Bull Music Academy tent a while later with their chilled out brand of electro-rock. Although Caribou is officially just David Snaith, the live experience sees a cluster of musicians take to the stage while Snaith remains on percussion. The end result is much heavier, twisted and a lot more addictive than you might expect, with most Spaniards readily raving away to Odessa and the blissfully tripped-out slice of gorgeousness Sun. It’s a pretty damn sophisticated outing and it’s a good thing we can claim he’s half-British.

Our day two review will be up next with image galleries :)
